Safer Internet Day

6th February, 2024

With it being Safer Internet Day today, there is no better time to talk about keeping children safer online. Foster children can be particularly vulnerable online, particularly if there are restrictions on certain family members having contact with them. However, all children can be at risk when online.

So, we wanted to share some top tips when it comes to keeping children safe online.

1.      Open Communication

Rather than ruling with a list of don’ts, come from an angle of education. Provide children with information, aim to have an open manner when it comes to technology, meaning that if something occurs online which a child is not sure about they feel comfortable to come to you with questions.

2.      Educate Yourself

Don’t fall behind with technology. Stay up to date with current dangers and be aware of the different online mediums that children in the home have access to. We are aware of instances of a child being contacted via Xbox Live by a restricted family member, so be extra vigilant.

3.      Set Clear Boundaries

Children respond best when they understand what is expected of them. But be consistent, if you are going to implement a no phones at the dinner table expectation then make sure you lead by example and do the same.

4.      Use Parental Controls

You have laid great foundations, creating an open environment, you keep up to date with cyber dangers, and you have put into place fair boundaries and yet, the wrong content is still getting through. This can happen, the internet is rife with inappropriate content for children. Use of Parental Controls can form an extra layer of protection for keeping children safe. Internet Matters has a great guide with how to do this. Top tip when doing this, ensure that the controls are age appropriate.

5.      Reach Out

If you are unsure or suspicious about a child’s online activity and you have tried an open conversation, but your worries continue, or you discover worrying content then act. There is a wealth of resources to guide you to the right place, Child Line and CEOP to name a couple.
